Born Narendranath Datta on January 12, 1863 (on Krishna Saptami of Paush), Swami Vivekanand was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief disciple of Indian mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Swami Vivekananda was significant in introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.

A guru in his own right, he delivered a groundbreaking speech at the Parliament of the World's Religions in 1893, introducing Hinduism to America.
